About
Home Guides is the SmartQA Academy section for the questions homeowners have when water, humidity or cracks show up below the first floor. Answers online tend to come from contractors selling a fix or from content farms rewriting each other. Neither is much help when you are standing in a damp basement trying to decide what to do next.
What we cover
- Basement Water: Leaks, seepage, condensation and waterproofing options.
- Sump Pumps: Choosing, installing, maintaining and troubleshooting sump pumps.
- Crawl Spaces: Vapor barriers, encapsulation, venting and crawl space moisture.
- Foundations: Reading cracks, bowing walls and when to call a structural engineer.
- Drainage: Gutters, grading, French drains and keeping water away from the house.
- Humidity & Mold: Dehumidifiers, musty smells, efflorescence and mold prevention.
How guides are made
Each guide starts from a question people actually ask. We research it against primary sources, and every factual claim is cited. Drafting is assisted by AI. Before anything is published, a person reads the full draft, checks the cited claims and either approves it, sends it back for changes or rejects it. Our editorial policy describes each step.
Who reviews the guides
Shlomo Nachmani
Editor: checks every guide against its sources before publication
He edits and approves every guide. He is not a contractor, home inspector or engineer, and the guides do not rely on trade experience of his own. He checks that each claim matches its cited source, that the guide is clear, and that the safety wording tells you when to stop and call a qualified professional.
Shlomo Nachmani (M.Sc., CQM) is a medical-device quality and regulatory consultant. He has built and run ISO 13485 and FDA quality systems, prepared CE technical files through notified-body audits, and supported 510(k) and international registrations. He also develops and tests algorithmic trading systems on MetaTrader 5.
What we don't do
- We don't take payment from contractors or manufacturers to recommend them.
- We don't publish guides that haven't been reviewed by a person.
- We don't replace an on-site inspection. When a problem needs a professional, we say so.
How the site is funded
Home Guides plans to carry display advertising served by Google. Advertisers have no say over what we publish, and an ad is not an endorsement.
Part of SmartQA Academy
